Rolly [101 Dalmatians, 1961]

6 Jun

Out of Pongo & Perdita’s original litter of 15 pups, there was only one with an insatiable appetite. “I’m hungry, mother,” Rolly calls out in a soft voice as he looks over his shoulder to his parents, fat rolls evident over a stretched-out haunch. But even after this litter is joined with seven dozen other dalmatian puppies, Rolly is still the best fed among them, sticking out so much he nearly bungles their escape from Cruella and her thug duo, Horace & Jasper, by first getting stuck in a sizeable hole in the wall…

fumbling over the stairs while trying to keep up with the others, and finally by slipping away from the group from under a bridge that could not shelter the hungry pup’s girth among his fitter kin; Rolly slips out on the ice and manages to curl his spherical body up just short of sliding into the beam of Horace’s torch.

Yet even a

fter these close calls, he still begs for food, only this time the gluttonous pup finds it hard to edge his big snout in between those of his new brothers and sisters to get at fresh milk from a barn full of cows.

Yet again, Rolly nearly messes up the plan, only getting half his round frame coated in soot to disguise his dalmatian coat as that of a labrador.

Nevertheless, Rolly and the other puppies end up safe, and his fitter siblings look to this big new brother, sitting comfortably in thick rolls and still calling out lazily, with a heavy paw in the air: “I’m hungry mother. I really am!”
